2006 US Surf Kayak National Championships

THE ACTIVE.COM REGISTRATION SITE FOR THIS EVENT IS NOW UP.
CLICK HERE TO REGISTER, BUT PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION BELOW FIRST.

We invite all surf kayakers to attend the 2006 US Surf Kayak National Championships this September. Below is listed various information about the event. Please read over this carefully, it will be assumed that all competitors have read and understand this information.

This event will also serve as a stop on the World Cup Tour. It will be possible to qualify for the World Cup finals at this event. The National Champions will be crowned from American entrants, but everyone is invited to compete.

Dates: September 8th, 9th, and 10th 2006

We will definitely be competing on September 9th and 10th. If neccessary due to registration and class size, we MAY use september 8th as well. If not, then we'll at least be able to use the sites as an official practice date on the 8th.

A more comprehensive schedule will be availible closer to the date.

Location: Hatteras National Seashore, NC
We have contracted with the National Parks Service to secure two possible options for event locations. One potential site is the public beach access in Frisco, NC, the other is the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse area.
These sites are within 15-20 minutes of each other, and we will be selecting the best site based on weather, waves, etc.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina has served us well as a competition location over the years. It is a unique area with lots of history and character, and we are excited to be holding this event in the OBX area. As is the case on the East Coast in the fall, there is always potential for a hurricane.....this can result in many scenarios, the best case.....we have awesome waves.....the worst case.....we're forced to evacuate inland. On the flip side, theres always potential for the surf to be completely flat. We have no control over the weather or the waves, but we're hoping that we'll get some of the world class swell that we've often surfed in the OBX.

Travel: The best option for plane travel is probably to fly into the Raleigh, NC. From there it is around a 5 hour drive to the Hatteras area. Raleigh provides the best options, in the rare case that we are forced to move the competiton south to Wilmington, NC or the like.

Another flight option is into Richmond, VA. It is also about a 5 hour drive from Richmond to Hatteras. And Norfolk/Virginia Beach is another option, I've been told its closer than Richmond....not sure what the prices flying into there are though.

Try using Mapquest.com or google maps to determing for yourself which is the best option.

Unfortunately, due to roads and the geography of the Outer Banks, theres no easy way to get there, you've just got to drive and bear it.

Lodging: We've researched some options in the region of the contest area. There are many hotels in Avon, Rodanthe and Hatteras, so feel free to search for yourself. The hotels listed below are closer to the Lighthouse break and are located in Buxton, but only 15 minutes or so from the Frisco access.

Reigstration: All registration will be done online at www.active.com. Register for one class, then you will later be given the option (before you check out) to select more classes. Registration will end on September 1st. Fees are listed on the Active.com site, and will go up after August 25th, so get your entry in early.

Rules: We will be following the standard ESKA rules that govern ESKA sanctioned contests. All decisions made by the ESKA are final.

Classes: Here are the classes that will be offered. Any class that does not have 3 or more entrants may be cancelled. Please read the class criterea CAREFULLY to avoid confusion.

Men's High Performance:
Decked surf kayaks 9ft and under, any material, with or whithout fins. Judged by surf judges based on ESKA surf class criteria.

Men's International:
Decked surf kayaks 3 meters and over. No fins allowed. The hull will consist totally of convex radii in the cross section. The radii may vary over the entire length of the hull. There are no additional restrictions on deck design, hull radii or seat location. Judged by surf judges based on ESKA surf class criteria.

Men's K-1:
Plastic, production “whitewater” style decked kayaks intended originally for whitewater use. (Plastic surf kayaks are not intended for this class and should instead be used in the High Performance) With or without fins. No length restrictions. Judged either by whitewater judges, or by other K-1 competitors. Judging and scoring based on the “Fredricks System” with moves performed on the green face of the wave scoring higher than those done in the “soup”. Favors a variety of moves over traditional surfing.

There may possibly be a waveski event as well, if there is interest.

We hope to have a great event with lots of positive vibes, and we hope that you will join us.

Thank you, and check back here for updates and more details
