ESKA News: ESKA news, and Pura Vida World's report

ESKA news, and Pura Vida World's report

Hello everyone,
I am pretty excited to launch some updates to the ESKAsurf.com site. First and formost is this new front page. We can update it much more easily now, and we'll be posting many more updates because of it.

The 2005 Pura Vida World Championships were very successful for US East surf kayaking. Nearly all of the US East competitors advanced in the first round of the individuals in either IC, Open, or both. This means lots of US East folks in the top half of the results. Everyone surfed really well. We sent many people to the later rounds as well.

I am pretty sure we had the most 1st place finishes in the individual event.

Of course April McEwen ripped her way to being crowned World Champion. This woman hasn't been surf kayaking that long, but she came on the scene with determination and dominated nearly every heat she was in at the Worlds. She also pulled off an awesome off the lip move in one of her team heats. Congrats April.

Ross Fulcher surfed solidly, even when forced to lose his lunch while rolling. Like most of us, Ross got a nasty cold AND a nasty stomach bug. Even in this less than healthy state he was able to go on to win DOUBLE world champion crowns in the Grand Master's Open and Grand Master's International class. Even though, as Ross puts it, this was the "really really old guys" class, it was none the less hotly contested. Congrats Ross for becoming the first US East competitor to win twice at the same World Championships.

Also noteable is Kristen Whitmore, who showed that dawn patrol every day really does make a difference in your surfing skill. She made it all the way to the Women's Open finals, beating folks like former World Champ Gina Troiani. Kris finished 4th overall, a great result.

Anthony and Carlos both made semi finals in the Mens category, with Anthony making semi's in both classes. Big ups to them.

And as far as the Team Competition goes, the US East national team surfed their way to a tie for second! When it went to # of 1st place finishes, Ireland beat us by one placing, and we finished 3rd in the end. Regardless, everyone on the team surfed great, and I think we earned a lot of respect for East Coast style surfing. We remained tied for first throughout the opening rounds, and led for much of the finals day. If we all hadn't gotten sick, who knows what might of happened.
People were winning their heats, our women were dominating (particularly Lindsay who finished first in nearly EVERY heat), and our Juniors were a pleasant surprise. Though Zack and Grant hadn't surf kayaked much before the contest, they practiced hard at the event and did really well. Overall the team came through, with some stunning upsets, and some solid placings. Congrats to all on the team and thanks to Coach Mike Simpson, Manager Rick Dohaney, and Captain Antnee Bell.

Thats all for now, but check back soon for more updates, we're currently putting together a spring contest circuit thats sure to be a good time, as well as some other fun events.

Thanks
